This is a series of images I took of Olympic Hopefuls, who hope to be competing at London 2012. Each of these athletes compete now at National level but are the equivalent to the under 21’s in football, where they aren’t quite in the main team. They have 2 years to train hard and push themselves to get in to that final squad and have the hopes of the country on their shoulders. I wanted all the focus to be on them, which is why I decided to shoot in a studio like environment which consisted of 3 locations, a convent, an army camp and a hotel room. I took hundreds of shots with them in different positions, but for me the ones that worked best for the brief I had set myself of photographing Olympic Hopefuls worked best when they were looking away from the camera. This way it creates a somewhat vulnerability factor. I gained inspiration from the likes of Mark Zibert and David Clerihew who both light their subjects in a similar way.
Big thanks to Ben Gregory, Matt Myers, Jess Tappin, Rob Flack, Sam Ward and Jem Camble for helping me out.
And my assistant Montana
